The highly anticipated defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, has been postponed.

A close associate of the governor informed ZINGTIE that the previously arranged formal defection date of Monday, January 5, 2026 has been rescheduled for Monday, January 12, 2026.

Earlier reports stated that the Governor was ready to decamp to the APC on Monday, January 5.

However, a source close to the governor, who requested anonymity and attended a meeting between Governor Yusuf and Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja on Friday, disclosed that the governor requested more time.

According to the source, Yusuf wishes to further engage a few remaining state legislators and other important players who have yet to completely support the intended political maneuver.

Kano, a historic city known as a major hub of northern Nigerian politics, has recently been inundated with stories about the governor’s intended switch from the NNPP to the APC.

Given the potential ramifications for the state’s political balance, many political watchers have been caught off guard by the development.
