Breaking: Gunfire, explosions rock Niger Republic airport [Video]

Late Wednesday night, gunfire and loud explosions of unknown origin were heard near Niamey International Airport in the Niger Republic.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, revealed the incident in a post on X on Thursday.

Makama stated that local sources had informed him of violence occurring in the airport area, with heavy explosions and continuous gunfire reported nearby.

As per the sources, calm has returned to the area since then, but the attackers’ identities are still unknown.

“No official casualty figure has been released as at the time of filing this report,” a source said.

Niger’s security agencies have not yet released a comprehensive statement regarding the incident, and investigations are anticipated to shed light on the circumstances of the attack.
