At the age of 100, Jimmy Carter, the former president of the United States of America, passed away.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner and 39th president of the United States died on Sunday in Plains, Georgia.
The Carter Centre released a brief statement announcing his passing.
Since February, Carter had been receiving hospice care at his Plains home.
Carter used a wheelchair to attend the memorial services for his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who passed away on November 19 at the age of 96.
After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy and coming from a farming family in Georgia, Jimmy Carter held positions as governor and state senator before narrowly defeating incumbent Gerald Ford in the 1976 presidential contest.
He was in office from January 1977 to January 1981 for one term.
