Five months after the Paris 2024 Games, a fresh report claims that more than 100 disappointed competitors have returned their Olympic medals due to rust and damage.

During last year’s tournament, American skateboarder Nyjah Huston went viral after he disclosed the startling condition of the bronze he earned in the French capital, raising concerns about the low calibre of medals distributed by the Paris organisers.

Then, a number of other athletes, including Nick Itkin and Ilona Maher of Team USA, posted pictures of their medals’ quick degeneration.

Last month, two French Olympians were the most recent to voice their displeasure in public over the condition of their prized gongs.

Both Yohann Ndoye-Brouard and Clement Secchi resorted to social media to lament the condition of their bronze medals, which they shared in the 4×100-meter medley relay.

Additionally, according to a report from the French daily La Lettre, more than 100 athletes have returned their medals to the Paris organisers.

Days after the Olympics, Nyjah Huston revealed the startling state of his bronze medal.

Following his celebrations in the United States, Huston’s bronze medal from Paris began to chip.

Last month, French swimmer Clement Secchi posted a photo of his award with the words “crocodile skin” in the description.

According to the magazine, the management of Monnaie de Paris, the firm that made the medals, was fired because of the problem.

It has been claimed problems arose because of a ban on the use of a component in the medals and a lack of testing time.
A shortage of testing time and a prohibition on using a component in the medals have been blamed for issues.

Ten days after his performance at the previous year’s Games, Houston posted a picture of the medal he had won. He stated: ”Alright, so these Olympic medals look great when they’re brand new, but after letting it sit on my skin with some sweat for a little bit and then letting my friends wear it over the weekend, they’re apparently not as high quality as you would think,’ he said.

‘I mean, look at that thing. It’s looking rough. Even the front. It’s starting to chip off a little. So yeah, I don’t know, Olympic medals, you maybe gotta step up the quality a little bit.’

Within a week following taking third place in the women’s 3m synchronised springboard diving event with partner Scarlett Mew Jensen, British diver Yasmin Harper also disclosed that her medal was beginning to deteriorate.

‘There’s been some small bits of tarnishing,’ said Harper, who took home Britain’s first medal at the Games.

‘I think it’s water or anything that gets under metal, it’s making it go a little bit discoloured, but I’m not sure.’

A chunk of iron removed from the Eiffel Tower during renovations in the 20th century is used to set the medals, which were created by French luxury jeweller Chaumet.

Yohann Ndoye-Brouard, another French Olympian, shared his own rusty bronze medal on X.

Although the precise composition of medals varies from Olympics to Olympics, the Paris 2024 medals feature a little portion of the Eiffel Tower as a tribute to the host city.

The majority of gold medals are composed of silver that has been coated in gold. Bronze medals are usually a blend of copper, zinc and tin.

When bronze is exposed to air and moisture, it oxidises spontaneously. The amount of metal in the alloy determines how rapidly bronze deteriorates, however less expensive metals frequently accelerate the process.
