Vice President Kashim Shettima has landed in the United Kingdom, where he is scheduled to oversee the transportation of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s body back to Nigeria for interment.

According to a statement released early Monday by Shettima’s media assistant, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President was welcomed at the medical facility by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuff Tuggar.

Insiders from the presidency revealed that Shettima departed Nigeria around midnight on Sunday en route to the UK.

On Monday morning, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum and the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, were also present to receive him upon arrival.

Buhari died on Sunday following an extended stay in a UK hospital due to a lingering illness.

Before his death, the former President had endured a series of undisclosed health issues throughout his two-term leadership of Nigeria.

His body is expected to be flown into the country today, with burial proceedings set to follow Islamic customs.
