National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members will no longer be posted to positions outside of their areas of study, according to a policy change announced by Minister for Youth Development Ayodele Olawande.
In an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on the Mic On podcast, Olawande talked about his own NYSC experience in Gombe, where he was assigned to a school even though he was studying civil engineering.
He voiced his displeasure with these discrepancies and questioned their applicability to career advancement.
The minister stressed that in order to guarantee that corps members are assigned positions that correspond with their areas of expertise, he had issued a ministerial directive.
He reaffirmed his commitment to establishing a more significant and fruitful service year by emphasising that this policy would be rigorously enforced.
Olawande went on to say that rather than being a standard national duty, the NYSC should give corps members the chance to acquire worthwhile experiences that will help them in the future.
He said, “I’ve made a ministerial order and I’m serious about it. All these implementations are going to come out. No corps member should be posted to where it is not their area of study. It will never happen again. I can tell you for free. I’m going to start fighting people about it. If they like, let anything happen but as much as I have the backing of the president.
“We must do the right thing. If we don’t do it now, there is no time we can do it again. It must be a productive year. Not that I just want to go and serve my father’s land. It must be a scheme that will affect your life positively within one year.
