Students of Tai Solarin University of Education have raised concerns over recent robbery attacks in their host communities in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. In an open letter addressed to Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Students’ Union President, Tomide Abidakun, and General Secretary, Kehinde Olalekan, called for state government intervention, citing the threat to their lives and disruption to their studies.

The students alleged that they have been ambushed, robbed, and injured in violent attacks, particularly in areas like Ijele, Abapawa, and Imaweje, where they reside. “This crisis began to escalate on Wednesday, May 8, 2025, with an armed robbery reported around 10:30 PM at the Council junction, a key route leading into our campus,” the letter reads.
The students claimed that despite multiple reports, security agencies, including the Ogun Police Command, So-Safe Corps, and Amotekun Security Network, have been inactive. “We are often met with disappointing excuses such as ‘No fuel for the patrol vehicle’, ‘Our bike is faulty’, ‘Mobilise us first’,” the letter noted.
The students also alleged that security personnel have extorted them, turning victims into funders of their own safety. “It is heartbreaking to witness law enforcement agencies switch roles, leaving students to organise their own local surveillance while those officially responsible sleep or look away,” the statement added.

The students requested that the state government deploy skilled security personnel, create a dedicated joint task force, and declare a state of emergency on security until peace is restored. They also demanded disciplinary action against erring officers who neglect their duty or extort students.
If the silence from the government and security agencies continues, the students threatened to stage a mass protest. Efforts to contact the spokesperson for the Ogun Police Command were unsuccessful.
“We need immediate deployment of skilled security personnel and the creation of a dedicated joint task force comprising Police, So-Safe, and Amotekun to conduct daily patrols,” the students demanded. “We also need a declaration of a state of emergency on security until peace is restored and disciplinary action on erring officers who neglect their duty or extort students.
