Donald Trump, the US president-elect, has stated that Canada may become the 51st US state.
Trump claimed that because Ottawa is experiencing a political crisis, “many Canadians” are in favour of the concept.
Trump claimed that Canada would save a significant amount of money on taxes and military protection in a post on his Truth Social account on Wednesday.
He wrote: “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State.
“They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State.”
The US president-elect stated in November that combining the two countries would not only address his worries about fentanyl trafficking, which he has vowed to combat with a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods, but also potentially reduce illegal immigration, which is a problem primarily along the US southern border.
During a meal at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, Trump proposed the idea to Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada.
