The British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation (BATNF) has launched the Sustainable Development of Maize Micro-Enterprise Farmers Project in Oke-Ako, Ekiti State, in partnership with SwagCo and Odua Investment Company. The initiative aims to empower over 100 smallholder farmers through enhanced access to inputs, sustainable agricultural practices, and market access.
The project’s goal is to boost maize productivity, promote climate-smart practices, and enable sustainable livelihoods for farmers. According to Mr. Oludare Odusanya, General Manager of BATN Foundation, “This project is anchored on a simple but powerful vision: to boost maize productivity, promote climate-smart practices, and enable sustainable livelihoods for our farmers.”

The Chief of Staff to the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Hon. Niyi Adebayo, represented the governor at the flag-off ceremony and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to agricultural development. “Ekiti is ready for investment and partnership in agriculture. We encourage more collaborative efforts that prioritize the empowerment of our farmers and the sustainability of our food systems,” he said
The project will provide participating farmers with improved maize seed varieties, targeted agronomic training, and extension services designed to embed smart, sustainable farming practices. Odusanya emphasized the importance of collaboration, saying, “This collaboration is a testament to what is possible when the public sector, private enterprise, and development organizations work hand-in-hand. Together, we are sowing seeds of transformation.”
The initiative is expected to have a long-term impact on the region, opening new opportunities for farmer-led micro-enterprises, youth engagement in agriculture, and value chain development. Community leaders and beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the initiative, hailing it as a lifeline for local farmers and a catalyst for economic resilience
