The family of Muhammadu Buhari, the late former president of Nigeria, has strongly warned against the alleged fraudulent and unapproved exploitation of Buhari’s name, image, and legacy for commercial or personal benefit.

The family expressed concern through their attorneys at Gamzaki Law Chambers about recent instances of people and organizations making fake connections to the deceased leader in an effort to obtain funds or sway judgments.

The attorneys said they had been directed to address “disturbing reports of fraudulent impersonation and the unlawful use” of Buhari’s identity in a public notice dated July 22, 2025, signed by Dr. Sulaiman Usman SAN.

They emphasized that without the legal consent of the legitimate heirs, no person, group, or corporate entity is allowed to advocate for or act on behalf of the Buhari family.

According to the statement, attempts to capitalize on Buhari’s memory were denounced as an exploitation of the legacy of a man who was greatly respected for his integrity and service.

“The family has observed with concern the activities of persons who falsely claim affiliation to the Buhari family, or who use the late President’s name, legacy, or imagery for personal gain, influence-peddling, or fraudulent financial solicitation—all without the knowledge, consent, or authority of the lawful heirs,” the lawyers declared.

“They warned that any person or entity found misusing the late president’s name would face appropriate legal action, including possible criminal charges.“

“All unlawful interference with the legacy of a revered national figure will be met with criminal prosecution and civil claims for damages,” the notice stated.

In addition to financial frauds, the attorneys pointed out that unapproved use of Buhari’s name could confuse people, harm the family’s reputation, and mislead the public.

Before providing assistance to anyone claiming to be their representative, the family asked the public, government organizations, and contributors to exercise caution and double-check assertions.

The warning stated that only officially approved legal channels would be used for any sincere correspondence from the Buhari family or pertaining to its issues.

Additionally, the attorneys gave contact details to anyone who wanted to report questionable activity or verify validity.

Buhari died earlier this month in London at the age of 82. Buhari was president of Nigeria from 2015 until 2023.
