The extension of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON, from 12 to 16 teams has been accepted by the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football, or CAF.
Additionally, CAF has decided to expand starting with the 2026 WAFCON, which Morocco will host.
The hosts Atlas Lionesses of Morocco, the reigning champions Super Falcons of Nigeria, and ten other nations have already secured their spots in the WAFCON 2026 finals.
Based on their current FIFA Women’s World Rankings, the top four teams from those eliminated in the final qualifying round have been chosen to complete the list of participants.
In Morocco, the already-qualified teams will be joined by the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, and Egypt.
The dates of the WAFCON 2026 finals are March 17–April 3.
Additionally, it will be the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying event for 2027.
