The Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) has received a historic $2 billion gift from Phil and Penny Knight, co-founders of Nike, to support its Knight Cancer Institute. This donation is the largest single gift ever made to a U.S. university, college, or academic health centre.

The gift will be used to integrate cancer research and scientific discovery with the treatment process, expanding and accelerating diagnostics and ensuring access to innovative clinical trials. The institute will become self-governed within OHSU, directed by a new Knight Cancer Group with its own board of directors

The donation was inspired by the vision of Brian Druker, the JELD-WEN Chair of Leukaemia Research, who has led the Knight Cancer Institute since 2007. The integrated cancer care model aims to simplify the experience for patients and families while providing cutting-edge care.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to invest in the next stage of the Druker-led revolutionary vision of cancer research, diagnosis, treatment, care, and someday, eradication,” said Phil and Penny Knight. “We couldn’t be more excited about the transformational potential of this work for humanity.”

The couple added, “We are confident that establishing the Knight Cancer Institute as a self-governed entity within OHSU will help the Knight and OHSU reach these goals.” This significant donation is expected to have a profound impact on cancer research and treatment and will likely lead to improved outcomes for patients and families affected by cancer.
