Following his team’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk shared what he said to referee Stuart Attwell.
Tottenham took the lead in the first leg thanks to a goal from Lucas Bergvall, the game’s lone goal.
According to Van Dijk’s post-match statement, he admitted to Attwell that he had made a “mistake” by failing to dismiss Bergvall prior to the young player’s late goal against Liverpool.
A minute earlier in the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Netherlands defender believed Bergvall should have been sent out for a second bookable infraction.
In the 68th minute, Bergvall had been sent off for a reckless sliding challenge on Luis Diaz.
The 18-year-old’s subsequent foul against Kostas Tsimikas, which seemed much worse than his initial one, went unpunished.
“Listen, I think it was quite obvious that it was going to be a second yellow,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports.
“I think that was pretty clear and it was a coincidence that a minute later he scores the winner.
“But it is what it is. He made a mistake in my opinion and I told him that.
“He thinks maybe he didn’t but it was quite obvious.
“Everyone on the sideline knew exactly that it was supposed to be a yellow.”
