Renowned Nigerian chef and current Guinness World Record holder, Hilda Baci, has shared the reason behind her decision to reduce the quantity of rice used in her ongoing bid to set a new world record for the largest serving of Nigerian jollof rice.
Originally planning to cook 250 bags, Baci announced during the event at Eko Hotels in Lagos that she opted to use 200 bags instead, citing safety and technical constraints related to the weighing process.
“When we began, we had to weigh the pot and every single ingredient that would go in. The standard crane and scale available can only carry 20,000 kilograms. It is safer to go below 20,000 kilogrammes so that my scale can carry it all at the same time,” she explained.
She noted that exceeding the maximum weight limit of the crane and scale both essential for verifying the record could compromise the success of the attempt, especially with the size and custom design of the pot involved.
Despite trimming down from the initial target, Baci emphasized that the accomplishment remains significant.
“Even at 200 bags, we are still making history. This is 4,000kg of rice, and it will feed 20,000 people comfortably. So we’re still up there,” she affirmed.
The event, which has drawn a massive crowd of food lovers, entertainers, and high-profile guests, has evolved into a vibrant celebration, complete with live performances, dancing, and celebrity appearances.
Baci described the challenge as the most ambitious project of her career, revealing that it took nearly a year of preparation to bring everything together.
“Fabricating the massive pot alone took about two months. Pulling everything together was hectic, but seeing it come alive makes it worth the stress,” she said, while thanking her team and sponsors for their unwavering support.
In a show of encouragement, the Guinness World Records office in London also reached out via social media, wishing her success in the remarkable undertaking.
