The Centre for Social Justice, Equity, and Transparency (CESJET) has made an urgent appeal to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, regarding the escalating insecurity in Otukpo and its surrounding communities in Benue State.

In a letter signed by its Executive Secretary, Ikpa Isaac, CESJET expressed concern over the increasing frequency of violent crimes, including murders, kidnappings, and armed robberies, which have left residents in a constant state of fear and anxiety.

The centre highlighted several recent incidents that illustrate the severity of the situation. These include the brutal murder of Chief Onche Akatu and the abduction of two people from his home in the Asa 2 area on March 31, 2024; the killing of five individuals in Okpomoju by suspected herdsmen earlier this year; the murder of Mrs. Felicia Ochigbo in the Old NTA area on March 30, 2025; and the killing of a Benue Links driver, along with the kidnapping of 14 passengers along the Ikobi route on April 3, 2025.

CESJET also noted a series of armed robbery incidents across various parts of the local government.

The centre pointed to past high-profile events, including the daylight assassination of retired Col. Ochefu in the late 1990s, the coordinated bank robbery involving five banks and the police on October 20, 2023, and the murder of Barr Mark Offikwu on November 20, 2024.

“These continuous attacks have created a climate of fear, paralysed economic activities, and severely disrupted community life, with ripple effects on the national economy,” the centre stated.

The organisation emphasized that the current police presence in Otukpo is woefully insufficient to tackle the growing security challenges and urged the Inspector-General to take immediate action to restore law and order in the area.
