The management of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State, has appealed for calm following a fire incident that affected its campus radio studio on Monday.

According to eyewitness reports, the fire was triggered by an electrical surge from the studio’s air-conditioning system. The flames spread quickly before firefighters arrived to contain the situation, leading to the loss of some studio equipment.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, said firefighters responded promptly to the distress call.

“When they arrived, the studio was engulfed in flames and smoke. They managed to stop the fire from spreading to other areas. No casualty was recorded, and we were able to save property worth millions of naira,” Akinwande explained.

He further advised the public to remain safety-conscious. “People should always have fire extinguishers and use them properly to stop small fires before they spread,” he added

Reacting to the incident, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Olufemi Atoyebi, clarified that the situation was not as severe as earlier reported.

“The radio station is a training station and not for commercial purposes. When the fire started, we called in our fire service operatives, who helped us to put it out. All the equipment is intact, just a few wires were affected, and we have fixed everything, and we are almost back on air,” Atoyebi said.

He dismissed claims that equipment worth millions was destroyed, assuring the university community that there was no cause for alarm.

“It’s not a major thing that can cause panic because the scene is far from residential buildings and the school is on holiday, so there are no students around,” he stressed.

The incident comes just weeks after a similar fire outbreak at Fresh FM’s studio in Ibadan on August 16. At the time, the Group Head of Corporate Affairs, Fresh FM Nigeria and Yinka Ayefele Limited, Samson Akindele, confirmed the development in a statement.
