Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has encouraged citizens to embrace generosity, emphasizing that acts of kindness bring spiritual blessings.

Obasanjo made this statement on Friday in Abeokuta during the official presentation and reveal of the design plans for the renovation of the Egba Central Mosque and the development of a new Islamic Centre at Kobiti, Abeokuta.

He appealed to all Nigerians, irrespective of their faith, to view the initiative as a shared responsibility and support its completion.

In the same vein, the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun represented by his Deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele described the initiative as a meaningful milestone for the Egba community, especially for Egba Muslims.

While recognizing Obasanjo’s contributions toward fostering interfaith unity and understanding, Abiodun pledged to undertake the construction of the mosque’s administrative building and a library.

Prominent individuals from across the country, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; the Alake and paramount traditional ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo; former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun; former Governor of Sokoto State, Aliyu Wammako; and former Nigerian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Sarafa Tunji Ishola, have all made financial contributions to support the mosque’s renovation.

Other distinguished individuals who have shown support for the initiative include Sir Kessington Adebutu, Chief Rasaq Okoya, the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Iya Suna of Egbaland, Alhaja Yemi Kolapo, and Senator Shuaib Salisu.

According to details provided by the Egba Muslim Council, the plan encompasses the refurbishment of the existing mosque along with the construction of several new facilities. These include an administrative wing, a library, a Quranic learning center, a multipurpose hall, a residence for the Imam, a commercial plaza, a healthcare facility, and a guest lodge.

During the unveiling of the project’s model, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, committed to personally reaching out to other high-profile Nigerians to gather the necessary support and funding needed to bring the vision to life.

The Alake of Egbaland emphasized the historical relevance of the renovation, noting that the update had been long overdue. He highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in maintaining both religious and cultural traditions for generations to come.

Abdulhakeem Tunji-Kalejaiye, who leads the committee managing the remodelling effort, revealed that 78 properties surrounding the central mosque in Kobiti would be taken down to accommodate the expansion.

He assured that affected residents would be relocated and provided with newly constructed homes on a 22-acre parcel of land in the Sodeke-Titun Sabo area of Abeokuta.
