A Cornwall-based charity, Georgia’s Voice, has established a vital drop-in hub for young women aged 18-25 struggling with their mental health. The charity’s founder, Sophie Alway, created Georgia’s Voice in memory of her teenage daughter, who tragically passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

*A Safe Space for Young Women*

The charity’s hub, named “The Chy,” is located at the Village Kitchen Café in Redruth and officially opens on Friday, with plans to operate every weekend. The Chy will provide a safe and supportive environment, staffed by trained support workers, offering free one-to-one support, drop-in sessions, and group workshops.

These services aim to empower young women with coping strategies and essential life skills to manage their mental health. The charity’s ultimate goal is to open The Chy 24 hours a day, seven days a week, pending additional funding.

*Addressing a Critical Need*

Sophie Alway emphasized the importance of The Chy’s location in Redruth, stating, “We chose Redruth because there is a real need here. It is an area of great deprivation, but also it is an area with fantastic transport links, so it’s very easy for people to get to from all over Cornwall.”

*Breaking the Isolation*

Ms. Alway highlighted the isolating effects of mental health struggles, saying, “Mental health can be very isolating. It can make you feel very alone, and you’re the only person who feels and thinks this way when in reality you’re not. A lot of people have these thoughts and feelings.”

The Chy aims to provide a supportive community where young women can connect with others who share similar experiences. As Ms. Alway noted, “This is a place to come and find your tribe, to find friends, to build your support network, and to reduce those feelings of isolation.”

With The Chy, Georgia’s Voice is taking a crucial step towards addressing the mental health needs of young women in Cornwall, providing a vital lifeline for those struggling in isolation.
