The University of Maryland (UMD) and the UMD College Park Foundation have announced a transformative $9 million bequest from Sterling Byrd, a generous gift that will significantly enhance the University Libraries’ ability to preserve and promote the institution’s rich history.

The funding will be used to support in-depth exploration and analysis of critical issues associated with the University Archives, advancing the mission of the University Libraries to collect, preserve, and provide access to historical materials that document the university’s development and contributions.

The endowment will have a lasting impact on research and teaching at UMD, promoting the use and enrichment of the archives through various initiatives, including:

– Lectures and public programs that showcase the university’s history and its relevance to contemporary issues

– Publications and exhibitions that highlight the university’s achievements and contributions

– Research grants and fellowships that support in-depth study of the university’s history and its impact on society

– Educational programs that integrate the university’s history into the curriculum, promoting a deeper understanding of the institution’s development and its role in shaping the world.

Furthermore, the gift will be used to support positions in the University Archives, ensuring that the university’s historical materials are properly cared for and made accessible to researchers and the broader community.

UMD President Darryll J. Pines emphasized the significance of the gift, saying, “When a university’s archives are well shared and understood, we help form a campus community that benefits from the lessons of our past bolstered by a determination to create a better future.
