*”Civil Defence Officers Wives Association Empowers Members with Skills Acquisition Training”*

The Civil Defence Officers Wives Association (CDOWA), Federal Capital Territory Command Chapter, has held a skills acquisition training and empowerment programme for its members, widows, and other female officers of the Command. The event aimed to improve the economic stability of the participants by equipping them with relevant, income-generating skills.

The Chairperson of CDOWA FCT Chapter, Bolanle Odumosu, described the programme as a movement of empowerment, growth, and opportunities. According to her, “As wives of officers, we understand the challenges and sacrifices that come with this noble profession. Our spouses dedicate their lives to keeping us safe, often putting themselves in harm’s way. As their partners, we play a vital role in supporting them and our families.”

Odumosu added, “This training programme is a testament to our commitment to empowering ourselves and our families. By acquiring new skills, we can enhance our personal and professional growth, improve our economic stability, and contribute to the well-being of our communities.” The training covered the production of items such as liquid soap, body cream, detergents, and disinfectants, and participants received starter packs and took part in sessions on branding, packaging, market access, and funding opportunities

The Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, praised CDOWA for fostering independence, economic resilience, and a sense of community through skill acquisition. She said, “This initiative embodies the spirit of sisterhood and community building, equipping women with valuable skills to foster independence and confidence.”

Benjamins-Laniyi also highlighted successful collaborations with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), including the Gender and Human Security Summit and the GBV Boot Camp that trained over 1,200 adolescents on self-defense and gender-based violence prevention. She expressed commitment to ensuring the safety of women and girls in the FCT and looked forward to continued collaboration with CDOWA.

The CDOWA Chairperson encouraged participants to take full advantage of the programme, engage actively, and use the skills acquired to improve their lives, families, and communities
