Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has revealed he was unsettled by an unexpected appearance from U.S. President Donald Trump during the team’s Club World Cup trophy celebration.
Trump, who had been invited to attend the post-match ceremony, made an unannounced move by joining the players on stage after Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
As Reece James lifted the trophy, the President remained on the podium among the squad, creating an awkward and bewildering moment for the players and staff. Cucurella admitted the incident left him feeling uneasy.
“We had been told Trump would come to present us with the trophy and that we couldn’t lift it until he left,” Cucurella told Spanish journalist Gerard Romero.
“And of course, we were all there waiting for him to leave, but the guy didn’t want to leave.
“We looked at him and he said, ‘Get him up, I’ll stay here, and so on.’
“And I wondered who would say anything to him, you know… I was scared s***less!”
