Inter Miami’s captain, Lionel Messi, is on the verge of surpassing the all-time FIFA Club World Cup goal record currently held by Cristiano Ronaldo and the late Pelé as the tournament kicks off this weekend.
The Argentine star, who has netted five goals in previous editions of the competition, is just two goals shy of equaling the record held by the legendary duo—both of whom are not part of this year’s event.
Messi will be representing Inter Miami, one of the 32 teams taking part in the newly expanded format of the tournament.
The MLS side is placed in Group A, where they are set to compete against Al Ahly, Palmeiras, and FC Porto.
Their first match will be against Al Ahly, scheduled for Saturday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Messi will be aiming to guide his team to a strong start as they face the Egyptian champions in their opening fixture.
