According to Hon. Leke Abejide, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) who represents the Yagba, East/West, and Mopa Federal Constituencies in the House of Representatives, he is currently the sole head of the party.
Speaking on Arise News, the lawmaker explained why he opposes the ADC coalition, claiming that they entered the party as like they owned it and ignored the people who have sustained it.
He asserted that while all parties require members, newcomers should respect those who came before them rather than assuming control of the party’s institutions as if no one had ever existed.
“What I have against the coalition is the way they came, if they came properly and also with the betterment of the party, there would have been an issue,” he said.
“But when you come in and start sweeping people, start taking charge, as if you have been there for 1000 years, or you are the owner of the party, this is my fault with them.
“If you are coming in, no problem. Every party wants to grow. You need members. If you come, and then you believe that somebody was there before you, and then you work with the person there, and not that you come and then you are silent, behaving as if you are the leader of the party immediately, and then taking control of structures.
“I can give you an example of my state, Kogi. I just heard that they said they are going to have a meeting in the leader’s house.
“And who’s the leader? I’m the leader of the ADC. Is there anybody higher than me in the state? Not only in the State, I’m the only elected member in the National Assembly, and indeed all over Nigeria, for now, in ADC.
“I have been there since 2018. A contestant on the platform in 2019, I never decamped. I’ve gone through my first term in the House of Reps, my second term the House of Reps. And even when we were coming again, somebody came along with me from my state, the next federal constituency to me also won by ADC, just because the way I made the party popular in my area.
“And the party has been existing. You came today, and you don’t recognize that somebody has already built this party. If I had decamped like the others did, maybe the party will have been deregistered before now,” he said.
