‘Compare yourself with your peers, not Fela’ – Yeni Kuti tells artistes

Yeni Kuti, a media figure and the daughter of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, criticized contemporary artists who liken themselves to the late Afrobeat legend, stating that such discussions overlook the essence of legacy.

In an interview with Arise TV, Yeni, who joined other family members in accepting Fela’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammys, remarked that Fela’s ongoing relevance nearly three decades after his death is self-evident.

She called on modern artists to honor Fela’s legacy and refrain from trying to downplay his accomplishments through comparisons with him.

“Don’t compare chalk and cheese. Fela is a legend, give him his flowers. He has done his part.

“If you are still talking about him 29 years after his death and you’re comparing yourself with him, you’re not a dead man walking. So, comparing yourself with him is not a good thing,” she said.

Yeni added, “Compare yourself with your peers and leave our legends alone. We have legends, let’s respect them.”

ZINGTIE recalls that Wizkid recently ignited controversy by asserting he is “bigger” than Fela while addressing Seun Kuti’s criticisms regarding comparisons between the Ojuelegba crooner and the Afrobeat legend.
