The Katsina State Hisbah Board has denied accusations that its personnel assaulted a young woman, Hauwa’u Lawal, during a recent enforcement activity in the state capital, labeling the allegations as false and deceptive.
In a widely circulated video, Lawal alleged that she was physically attacked by Hisbah officials while attempting to visit her brother, who was in custody at the board’s facility. She claimed the encounter left her with a broken leg and issues with her hearing.
Responding to the claims during a press briefing on Sunday, Malam Mohammad Shu’aibu, the Deputy Commander General of Operations, firmly rejected the allegations, stating that they lacked any supporting evidence and were entirely unfounded.
“No such assault occurred. The lady was prevented from entering the premises due to the nature of her immoral dressing. She became aggressive and attempted to slap one of our personnel.”
He went on to clarify that Lawal’s brother was taken into custody during a raid at an event venue in Katsina city, where he was accused of posing as a military officer and interfering with Hisbah officials during the operation.
“He presented an expired ID card with ‘Ex-boy’ written on it and falsely claimed to be a military personnel. That alone is a criminal offence,” Shu’aibu said.
Responding to Hauwa’u Lawal’s allegations of sustaining serious injuries, Shu’aibu stated that the board had requested medical documentation from her family such as an X-ray report to confirm the reported fracture, but none had been presented.
“We are yet to see any medical evidence to back her claims. If she truly sustained a fracture, the family should have provided a medical report or X-ray by now,” he added.
Shu’aibu also reaffirmed that the Hisbah Board remains dedicated to upholding moral standards in the state, stressing that its officers are trained to carry out their duties with respect and professionalism.
“Our mandate is clear; we are to fight immorality in society, and we train our operatives to be disciplined and respectful in all engagements,” he noted.
Also addressing the media during the briefing, Katsina State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hadiza Yar’Adua, confirmed that the ministry is actively looking into the matter.
“We are taking this matter seriously. The ministry has launched an investigation and once complete, our findings will be forwarded to the relevant authorities for appropriate action,” she said.
It will be recalled that Hauwa’u Lawal had accused officers of the Katsina State Hisbah Board of physically assaulting and mistreating her after a disagreement with the operations officer, identified as Nafiu, at the board’s headquarters.
The incident reportedly took place on April 15, shortly after she closed her cold drinks business at the Scorpion Arena Funfair in Katsina city.
Lawal alleged that the assault left her with a fractured leg and damage to her eardrum.
