The average cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, fell sharply in August 2025, dropping by 17.4% month-on-month (MoM) to ₦11,875 from ₦14,375 in July.

On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, prices also declined by 16.7%, compared to the ₦14,261.57 recorded in August 2024.

Market checks by Vanguard revealed that 1kg of cooking gas is currently sold at ₦950, ₦1,000, or ₦1,020, depending on location.

Meanwhile, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch for July 2025 reported a slight decline in average retail prices at the time.

The report stated:

“The average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of gas decreased by 1.91 percent on a month-on-month basis to ₦20,609.48 in July 2025 from ₦21,010.56 in June.”

Providing further details, the Bureau highlighted significant differences across states.

“On state profile analysis, Adamawa State recorded the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas with ₦22,528.39, followed by Rivers State with ₦22,512.49 and Taraba with ₦22,363.57. Conversely, the lowest average price was recorded in Yobe State with ₦19,030.00, followed by Niger and Nasarawa States with ₦19,154.99 and ₦20,000.62 respectively.”

The latest figures reflect both improved market supply and gradual adjustments in regional pricing, though costs still vary significantly across Nigeria
