Allegations that the Minister of State for Defense Bello Matawalle, misused party funds and made false statements about financial donations have sparked a new political tempest within the All Progressives Congress (APC) branch in Zamfara State.
The Zamfara APC Secretary, Hon. Mansur Aminu Khalifa said in a statement that Matawalle’s claim that he gave ₦500 million to APC followers was a hoax and that he should show evidence of the money’s distribution. Matawalle’s side was accused in the declaration of spreading lies to influence party members.
“The claim that Minister Matawalle donated ₦500 million to Zamfara APC supporters is misleading. Even Bashir Ataka, the former Welfare Secretary under Tukur Danfulani, has debunked this narrative,” the statement read.
When Khalifa claimed that Tukur Danfulani, the current state chairman, was no longer accepted by the party and insisted that his suspension was still in effect, the dispute within the state APC intensified even further. As a result, he ruled that what Danfulani and his executives did was illegal.
In addition to financial disagreements, the party charged Matawalle and his colleagues with misappropriating relief supplies, such as 12,000 bags of rice that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had given to APC members in Zamfara.
Furthermore, there have been charges of embezzlement of ₦50 million that President Tinubu contributed for victims of fire catastrophes and armed banditry, with assertions that the money has not reached the intended recipients.
Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji, a well-known APC leader in the state, was commended in the statement for his efforts to President Tinubu’s success in the 2023 election and his steadfast support of party members. Jaji was characterized as a significant political player within the APC organization of Zamfara.
The statement also highlighted Matawalle’s waning power by bringing up an instance in which locals allegedly stoned his convoy while he was recently in Zamfara, indicating the mounting disapproval of his leadership.
The statement cautioned that Matawalle’s political significance in Zamfara was waning as the 2027 elections approached and urged President Tinubu and the APC National Working Committee to exercise caution in light of his behavior.
In the meantime, the party reiterated its backing for the APC group led by Isiyaka Ajiya Anka, stressing that it will continue to be the rightful leadership in Zamfara until a new congress is called.
Party factions in the Zamfara APC are still accusing one another as the contest for political supremacy heats up, paving the way for a protracted struggle for control in the state.
