Eligible Nigerians have been cautioned by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Sokoto State not to register more than one voter, emphasizing that this is against the Electoral Act and will result in legal action.
Umar Garba, the state’s resident electoral commissioner (REC), issued the warning in his first interview with reporters at the commission’s Sokoto offices.
According to Garba, the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) campaign, which started with online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, is aimed at new voters, people who have moved and are looking for a transfer, and people who are renewing Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) that have been lost or destroyed.
Physical registration would start on August 25 in all 23 local government areas, the INEC state headquarters, and specified centers, he disclosed.
He clarified that registrants need to show a legitimate form of identity, including a passport, driver’s license, birth certificate, or national ID card.
Garba stated that INEC will use the Automatic Biometric Identification System and the Voter Enrollment Device to identify multiple entries in order to prevent election fraud.
