The Dangote Petroleum Refinery will today (Monday) deploy more than 1,000 Compressed Natural Gas-powered trucks, marking the first phase of its direct fuel distribution programme. The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria confirmed it is prepared to receive the trucks across its member stations.
Refinery officials said that the rollout coincides with the one-year anniversary of petrol production at the plant. Although the initiative was initially slated for August 15, it was delayed due to shipping bottlenecks in China. Dangote had ordered 4,000 CNG trucks from the Asian country, but the delivery was stalled because of insufficient vessels to transport them.
A senior Dangote Group executive disclosed that more than 1,000 trucks were delivered by late August, with additional consignments arriving steadily. “The trucks are arriving in hundreds every week,” the official said, requesting anonymity as they were not authorised to speak publicly.
With the available fleet, Dangote will commence direct, logistics-free fuel distribution today, a move expected to drive down petrol prices nationwide. The company announced that the gantry price of petrol will now stand at N820 per litre, while pump prices will vary slightly by region. Lagos and other South-West states will retail at N841 per litre, while Abuja, Rivers, Delta, Edo, and Kwara will sell at N851. “The first phase of the deployment will cover the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos, Kwara, Delta, Edo, Rivers, and South-West states, with nationwide expansion planned as additional trucks are delivered,” the Dangote Group explained in a statement
The company further noted that the shift to CNG-powered transport is projected to save the Nigerian economy more than ₦1.8 tn each year by reducing distribution costs, easing inflation, and lowering fuel prices. Dangote stressed that the refinery has already eliminated scarcity and stabilised fuel markets, with benefits extending to industries, transporters, and households.
“While substandard imports persist in the market, we remain committed to delivering high-quality, locally refined products through trusted partners. Our operations have created over 570,000 direct and indirect jobs, spurring community development through new road networks, power supply, and water infrastructure. The refinery also serves as a centre for skills transfer and technology advancement, providing practical training to thousands of Nigerian engineers and technicians. As for claims of monopoly, we reject these as recycled falsehoods,” the statement added.
According to the group, the distribution programme will support more than 42 million micro, small, and medium enterprises by reducing energy costs and increasing profitability. “Dangote Group is investing over N720bn into the programme, which is also anticipated to revitalise dormant filling stations across the country. The project is expected to create numerous direct employment opportunities, including roles for truck drivers, filling station managers, and fuel attendants,” it said.
The company called on stakeholders—including fuel station operators, telecoms providers, and large-scale energy users—to collaborate with the initiative to guarantee its success and maximise its economic benefits
