The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, has lost its spirit in Delta State, according to Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, after the defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Keyamo said this during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” show on Monday.

Ahead of the general elections in 2027, the minister noted that Delta was one of the PDP’s biggest backers and that the governor’s defection was one of the main advantages for the APC.

Recall that on April 23, Oborevwori and his deputy, Monday Onyeme, left the PDP for the APC.

According to the ZINGTIE, Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor’s predecessor and Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, accompanied him.

“The PDP knows that they have lost something like their soul. Delta was like the soul of the PDP. Delta was one of the major funders of the PDP; they have lost it.

“This is one of the major boosts for the APC, ahead of 2027, and even beyond in terms of the growth and development of the party. So, it’s a major political seismic activity that took place today,” Keyamo said.

He asserted that the defection was crucial for the state’s citizens as well since it would enable the state to better align with the central government’s political views.

“It’s a win for the people of Delta State first of all and a win for the Nigerian people as a whole, because it’s always important for a state to align with the politics of the government at the centre. You may say that after politics, then it’s all governance.

“But as human beings, sometimes this division between parties affects governance; so you have a different party at the state level and another one at the federal level,” he added.

The minister underlined that the governor was already succeeding in the state, hence Oborevwori’s switch to the APC was a one-size-fits-all situation.

He clarified that the state’s APC leaders decided to designate the governor as the party’s head.

Chieftains of the ruling APC, including Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who is the chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the party’s National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, and others, formally welcomed Oborevwori into the party on Monday.
