The Del-York Creative Academy, a subsidiary of Del-York Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) to empower 10,000 students with skills in digital creativity, animation, and post-production under the Youths in Animation and Post-Production Initiative (YAPPI).
The collaboration seeks to bridge the gap between technical education and the global creative industry, while expanding opportunities for Nigerian youths in emerging digital sectors.
At the signing of the MoU, the Chief Operating Officer of Del-York Group and YAPPI Programme Lead, Ikenna Ogweike, said the initiative was designed to build a new generation of African talents capable of competing globally. “YAPPI is designed as a pipeline to create a generation of African talents that can compete in global markets,” he stated.
Ogweike noted that Africa has long been a consumer of creative content rather than a major producer. Highlighting Nigeria’s current contribution of less than two per cent to the global animation market, he said the programme aimed to change the narrative. “The programme sees itself as a catalyst to shift those statistics, transforming Nigeria into a digital outsourcing hub comparable to India’s success in IT and business process outsourcing. We have launched with the bold target of training 60,000 young people within five years,” he explained
He added that the project will not only provide training but also mentorship, job placements, freelance opportunities, and international collaborations. The long-term vision, he said, is to embed such initiatives within tertiary institutions. “The broader vision is to ensure future generations grow up with the skills, confidence, and global mindset to compete anywhere in the world,” Ogweike stressed.
The Rector of YABATECH, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, described the partnership as a significant milestone for the institution. “Our vision has always been to combine technical expertise with creative innovation. This partnership is about equipping young people with skills that guarantee employability and also position them as creators and entrepreneurs in the digital space. YABATECH’s history as Nigeria’s first higher institution places it in a unique position to lead in this sector,” he said.
Abdul further explained that the collaboration aligns with the institution’s drive to pursue international linkages, enhance technical training, and leverage its vibrant student population and institutional credibility to maximize impact.
The Director, Centre for Linkages, Partnership and International Relations (CLPIR) at YABATECH, Dr. Mosud Ajala, who facilitated the agreement, emphasized its empowering potential. “The initiative will empower 10,000 students of the college, especially girls, with no-cost creative-tech training. By training 10,000 of them, especially ladies, with globally relevant creative-tech skills, we are not only preparing them for the future of work but also positioning the college as a leader in innovative industry–academia collaboration,” he said.
