Dele Momodu, a former presidential aspirant and prominent figure in the opposition coalition, has revealed that there was once an agreement for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to succeed ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo after his first term in office.

According to Momodu, the plan was for Atiku to assume leadership following Obasanjo’s initial tenure, but the arrangement eventually collapsed. In response, Obasanjo reportedly stripped Atiku of key constitutional privileges he previously held.

Momodu explained that Atiku’s expected rise to the presidency had been backed by a strong alliance of former state governors.

He made these revelations in a recent article shared on his official Facebook page.

Atiku served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 during Obasanjo’s two-term presidency. Since then, he has made multiple attempts to secure the country’s top office but has not been successful.

In the 2023 general election, Atiku finished as the runner-up to Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, the post reads partly: “The deal was that he would take over after their first term in office but it fell through despite the humongous support from the majority of the governors.

“He still respected his boss and doused the tension in the second term when he was virtually stripped of his Constitutional obligations and rights. He accepted his fate with uncommon equanimity.

“Since then he has engaged in productive and well managed businesses unlike most of his contemporaries who cannot survive outside power and politics.

“He is a man with Midas touch and has his fingers in many fruitful pies. Nigeria would have been a much better place if the majority of our leaders had been gainfully employed like him.”
