Professor Jerry Gana, a founding figure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said that while Peter Obi is a capable leader, the party has a candidate he believes is even more qualified.

Nonetheless, Gana stated that if Obi were to return to the PDP, he stands a strong chance of winning in Nigeria’s northern states.

In recent weeks, Gana has repeatedly urged the former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate to rejoin the PDP, arguing that the platform offers a more viable path to challenge the current administration.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Gana expressed confidence in Obi’s ability to outperform any rival in the North if he were to contest under the PDP.

Obi, however, has reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party and remains aligned with the coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He left the PDP in May 2022 to pursue his presidential bid with the LP.

“The PDP is on the ground. I’m a researcher, and I research opinions. In the northern states, Peter Obi under the PDP will defeat any candidate because our people are very fair-minded and just.

“We are reaching out to Peter Obi. Because I’m leading a search team and there are many brilliant people. Peter may be good, but we have somebody better. So, we are searching.

“We made a mistake in 2023. If I were Atiku, I would say, ‘Peter, it is now your turn; I would give you a vice-president,’ but he didn’t,” he said.

Echoing similar sentiments, former PDP National Legal Adviser Jacob Mark said on Thursday that Obi is welcome to return to the party if he chooses to. He added that the PDP remains Obi’s strongest chance of winning the presidency in 2027.
