The government of Delta State has stated that it is uneasy about the lack of enthusiasm among young people in joining the military and paramilitary forces, which prevents Deltans from occupying all of the slots allotted to the state.

When the Delta State Awareness Creation Committee on Youth Enlistment in the Military and Paramilitary Services submitted its report to the State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Secretary to the State Government Dr. Kingsley Emu made the following statement.

He stated that the special committee was formed to address the issue as a result of the development, but he also gave the assurance that the recommendations in their report would be put into practice to increase the proportion of candidates from Delta State who apply during recruitment processes.

Accepting the report on the governor’s behalf, he continued, saying that employment in the armed forces, law enforcement, customs, or other paramilitary services aligns with the government’s agenda items related to wealth creation and employment.

He underlined the necessity of the government starting ongoing awareness and sensitisation efforts about degree programs at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), paramilitary recruitment, and the military.

“This report is very important. I commend the Chairman and members for your time and various contributions. I will present the report to His Excellency, the Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori, JP, for his attention and necessary action.

“I have no doubts in my mind that implementation shall commence very soon, because we need to start utilizing our slots during military and Paramilitary recruitments, going forward.

“In the last Army recruitment we did well as a state, a total number of 137 qualified Delta Youths were recruited against the 80 recruited in 2023, due to a massive media awareness campaign embarked upon by the State Orientation and Communications Bureau. We shall sustain media advocacy and other publicity strategies.

“Careers in military and Paramilitary services are in tandem with the job and wealth creation programmes encapsulated in the governor’s MORE agenda,” Dr Emu said.

The chairman of the committee and commissioner for youth development, ThankGod Harry, stated during the presentation of the report that the group had completely stuck to her terms of reference and that the recommendations would be strictly implemented in order to achieve government goals.
