The Osun State High Court in Ilesa ordered the State Independent Electoral Commission, or OSSIEC, to hold elections for the empty positions of local government chairman and councillors in all 30 local government areas and area offices on Saturday.

Justice A. Aderigbigbe, who delivered the decision, declared that there is vacancy in the state’s 30 local government districts, as established by the Federal High Court’s decision.

This order followed a suit filed in court by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one of the major parties participating in the election.

The court further ordered and required all security services, including the Nigeria Police, Department of State Security Services (DSS), Nigeria Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), and others, to provide appropriate security during and after the election.

This comes as the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, have warned that the planned LG election is unlawful.

The AGF announced in a statement on Thursday that the election would not take place, citing a recent Court of Appeal decision that reinstated previously fired local council officials in Osun State.

However, the state government remained steadfast, with Governor Ademola Adeleke asking registered voters in the state in a state-wide broadcast on Thursday to vote in the Saturday election.
