President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to provide Nigerians with a transparent and truthful explanation for what it described as a “sudden and surprising overhaul” of the country’s military leadership.

The demand from the opposition party comes after the president fired the majority of the Service Chiefs he nominated over two years ago.

The ADC voiced alarm in a statement released by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, its National Publicity Secretary, claiming the reshuffle followed widespread rumors of a coup attempt.

Despite the President’s constitutional authority to alter the military hierarchy, Abdullahi noted there are significant concerns about the timeliness of this move.

He went on to say that Nigerians were confused by the government’s unclear response to the coup rumors.

The ADC claims that the now-removed Chief of Defence Staff was only elevated last year, and that many of the sacked officers had only been in their positions for three years. The party cautioned that a shift of this magnitude may upset the military and jeopardize internal harmony.

The statement further emphasized that the public should be given a complete and open explanation of the real factors that led to the decision. It pointed out that insurgency and banditry are still on the rise throughout the nation and accused the Tinubu administration of being sidetracked from important national security issues.

The widespread turnover of military leaders, according to the ADC, may increase public mistrust and conspiracy beliefs. As a result, it urged the government to behave openly and reassure the populace that Nigeria’s democracy is safe and stable.

The situation in neighboring Chad and other Sahel nations should serve as a lesson of the perils of political diversion during times of insecurity, the ADC stated, adding, “As an opposition party, our concern is the peace and stability of Nigeria.”
