Former West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has criticized Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for how he handled forward Raheem Sterling.
Cole suggested that Arteta showed disrespect to the Chelsea loanee, referencing a substitution made by the Arsenal manager in the team’s recent 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
With the score tied at 1-1, Arteta’s side was in desperate need of a goal to keep their slim Premier League title hopes alive.
However, Arteta chose to keep Sterling on the bench and instead brought on left-back Kieran Tierney to play in a more advanced position.
Speaking on the Dressing Room podcast, Cole expressed his disapproval of Arteta’s decision.
Cole said: “That’s disrespectful. Raheem is a proper player, we know that. I actually think he did alright at Chelsea, I don’t think he done bad.
“He did not suit the club, he is getting on and they want to get youngsters in.
“But he is gone to Arsenal and I was thinking he was going to do well. Forget about all the noise, actions say a lot.
“They needed a goal and he brought on Kieran Tierney instead of a seasoned pro, a goalscorer that might get back on track.
“He could make something happen. For me, I would say that is disrespectful.”
