Germany’s public prosecutor revealed fresh murder accusations on Wednesday against a palliative care physician based in Berlin, who is now believed to have taken the lives of at least 15 individuals under his care.
Authorities indicated that the death toll could rise sharply, as they are currently analyzing 75 more incidents tied to the suspect.
The 40-year-old physician has been detained since August 2024.
At first, prosecutors linked the suspect to four fatalities, then increased the total to eight, then 10, and now 15. The suspected killings reportedly happened while the doctor was working with a home-care service that tended to patients with terminal conditions. The earliest of the confirmed deaths goes back to 2021.
Officials claimed that in September 2021, the doctor injected a 25-year-old female patient with a “lethal mixture of various medications” without a valid medical reason. It is suspected that the same technique was used in other deaths as well.
Investigators emphasized that the patients were not in the final stages of their illnesses when they passed away.
The doctor became a person of interest after four individuals died between June 11 and July 24, 2024. The victims, ranging in age from 72 to 94, passed away in their residences in Berlin, which were later set ablaze—allegedly as a means of destroying evidence.
According to the prosecutor, “the police investigated the incidents as arson resulting in death, the suspicions rose after his care service provided crucial tips that backed up the case”.
As the homicide division of Berlin’s state criminal office continues examining the medical records tied to the suspect, the case is being prepared for submission to the Berlin regional court.
