Despite a ruling by the Supreme Court that gives local government councils across the country financial autonomy, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has ordered recently appointed transition committees to resume work in the state’s 18 LGAs and 33 LCAs.
Operational voids are to be avoided, according to the direction issued by Amidu Takuro, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. The appointments were earlier upheld as valid by Kayode Ajulo, the state’s attorney general and commissioner of justice.
Following the High Court’s annulment of the 33 LCDAs, Aiyedatiwa recently selected 357 committee members. Meetings with the committees revealed Takuro emphasising adherence to electoral laws, even though the Supreme Court ordered financial support only for councils led by elected officials.
He added that the committees, selected by the Governor, begun activities without formal inauguration, citing procedural limitations and ongoing negotiations among Governors.
