U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declined his offer to deploy American troops to assist in fighting drug cartels within Mexico, suggesting that her refusal stemmed from fear.
Trump alleged that Sheinbaum was too intimidated by the influence of the cartels to make sound decisions.
Speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One on Sunday, the U.S. President remarked, “If Mexico wanted help with the cartels, we would be honored to go in and do it.
“The president of Mexico is a lovely woman, but she is so afraid of the cartels that she can’t even think straight.”
Previously, Sheinbaum stated that she had turned down Trump’s proposal to send U.S. forces into Mexico to support anti-drug trafficking efforts.
Trump, during his second term in office, has adopted a tougher stance on issues related to transnational crime.
Since the beginning of the year, military activity and troop deployment along the U.S.-Mexico border have significantly increased.
