The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced that Dumebi Kachikwu, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, is no longer a member and therefore has no influence over the party’s leadership decisions.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made this statement during an interaction with journalists on Saturday in Abuja.
Earlier, Kachikwu criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for recognising David Mark as ADC national chairman. He called INEC irresponsible and expressed distrust in the current electoral leadership.
In response, Abdullahi emphasized that being a former presidential candidate does not give Kachikwu ownership or control of the party.
“He (Kachikwu) had no business in this conversation. He is not even a member of the ADC. That is very clear. A one-time presidential candidate of any party does not own the party. He does not have a say in the direction of the party. You were given the ticket of the party to run a particular election. That does not make you a permanent candidate of the party,” Abdullahi said.
The ADC spokesman also condemned Kachikwu for what he described as “divisive rhetoric” and for labeling the party leadership as “old people.”
Abdullahi added that the party recognizes that efforts to destabilize opposition groups will also target the ADC coalition.
