A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu on December 17, 2024, leaving widespread destruction and devastation in its wake. World Vision is mobilizing its teams to deliver immediate assistance to affected communities, with over 25,000 people displaced and thousands more without access to clean water, electricity, and basic necessities.

“The impact of this earthquake is devastating, and the needs are immense,” said Clement Chipokolo, Country Director of World Vision Vanuatu. “We are committed to supporting affected children and families and rebuilding their lives.

World Vision is working closely with Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office and international partners to address the immediate needs of the affected population. A seven-day state of emergency has been declared, with authorities leading critical search and rescue operations, clearing debris, and restoring essential services.

International aid has begun arriving, but the scale of the disaster calls for a sustained and coordinated global response. World Vision aims to support at least 4,700 households in the hardest-hit areas by distributing essential supplies, including temporary shelter materials, hygiene kits, and clean drinking water.

Recognizing the unique vulnerabilities of children, World Vision is also providing psychosocial support to help young people cope with the trauma of the earthquake and ongoing aftershocks.

A low-pressure system is currently approaching the region, threatening to bring further challenges, including flooding and landslides. World Vision Vanuatu is monitoring the situation closely and is prepared to respond to any additional crises that may arise.

World Vision is appealing to donors and partners to provide vital support to meet the immense needs of the affected communities and to assist with long-term recovery efforts.
