Five suspected illegal revenue collectors were arrested at the state’s international market by members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Ebonyi State Internal Revenue Board (IRB).

During a market raid, the arrest was made. The offenders were apprehended while stealing the unlawful tax from market women in various parts of the market.

Some receipt booklets and cash already gathered from impoverished women and children selling sachet water, vegetables, and other small products are among the items recovered from them.

Immediately following the arrest, the market women began praising Governor Francis Nwifuru.

Since the unlawful revenue collectors take between N50 and N100 each day or they will carry their items until they pay, several of the women informed ZINGTIE that they have been a pain in their side.

According to Emmanuel Elechi, the team leader for the Revenue Board and the board’s ICT coordinator, the suspects were arrested for repeatedly breaking Governor Nwifuru’s order exempting vegetable and minor traders from paying taxes.

“We are determined to flush out illegal revenue collectors who are bent on tarnishing the image of the board. We must adhere strictly to the directive of the Governor to allow petty traders and vegetable sellers to do their business without paying tax.

“Our governor in his wisdom knows what the poor are going through and decided to reduce the hardship but some people are sabotaging the gesture in a bid to enrich themselves. We cannot tolerate that, we shall continue to arrest them and prosecute them to serve as a deterrent to others”.

In an effort to curb crime and plug income leaks in the state, the board also called attention to the automation of e-ticketing for commercial motorbike and tricycle operators.

Chief Christopher Omo-Isu, Chairman of the State Revenue Board, flagged off the exercise.

He pointed out that the state’s commercial motorcycle and tricycle profiling will lower crime and prevent double taxation. He said that by automating revenue generating and profiling the vehicles, any operator who uses them to commit crimes would be found, apprehended, and prosecuted.

Omo-Isu claimed that because operators would be required to register at registration locations within two weeks of the start of enforcement, the innovation would lessen the amount of touting that occurs in the state’s marketplaces, streets, and major roads.

In order to bring safety and rationality to the revenue drive and lessen the conflict between the touts and the cyclists/operators, he asked the state’s citizens to embrace the new system.
