In Ekoli, Edda Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, there has been one recorded death and numerous injuries.

Since last month, the community has been tense due to attacks by alleged political thugs that destroyed properties valued at millions of naira and took a life.

The politician’s SUV was smashed by gunfire, but Dr. Eni Uduma Chima, a former local government chairman and member of the House of Assembly, and his younger brother, Chima Uduma Chima, survived the attack.

Following the incident, several community members exiled Eni and the younger brother for seven years.

Those who exiled the two accused them of inciting communal conflict.

The community was tense due to the expulsion, which was made worse on Wednesday after Udu Nnachi Uzor was killed.

According to eyewitness accounts, Udu was killed at his home in the community’s Ndenworo hamlet by a group of people known as the Catcham guys.

In a phone conversation, his wife, Onyinye, who was present at the scene, described how the suspects, who numbered around 20, broke into their home at around noon and inquired about her husband.

She claimed that, “They moved straight into the room and shot him dead. He was shot by one of the Catcham members known as ‘Deri’”.

The remains of her husband, she added, had been placed in the mortuary.

Chief Etta Egor, a community leader, recounted the incident and claimed that the Catcham vigilante group had been provoking unneeded tension and spreading mayhem in Ekoli-Edda.

“We sighted them going into the villages armed with pump action rifles in the company of policemen and soldiers. We were wondering what the problem was this time around.

“Suddenly, we started hearing gunshots and when we rushed to the house of Nnachi Uzor, he had already dropped dead.

“We met the wife and family members crying. We don’t know the crime Ekoli has committed that the government has allowed these people to be attacking and killing our innocent youths like this,” he recounted.

According to sources, the previous council chairman’s moving MAC-Truck, which the thugs diverted, is still missing.

Joshua Ukandu, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations officer, stated that the command has not yet received the incident’s details from the Divisional Headquarters DPO of the Edda local government.
