According to reports, a shootout between suspected kidnappers and Edo State Police Command agents claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl.

On Friday, July 11, 2025, the girl was one of several passengers kidnapped by gunmen along the Fugar-Agenebode road in the Etsako East Local Government Area.

Moses Yamu, the Edo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, said this in a statement on Saturday.

But he added that following the shootout, 14 lives were saved.

According to Yamu, the victim was shot dead by the escaping kidnappers in the crossfire.

He added that search operations are still on to secure the safe rescue of one female victim who has yet to be identified.

According to the spokesperson, the rescue effort was carried out by a squad of local vigilantes, hunters, and Command personnel in Agenebode who acted quickly and chased the attackers into the forest.

Yamu went on to say that 14 passengers who had been abducted were successfully rescued during the gunfight that broke out around Obe Hill by Pipeline on the way to Ajaokuta.

Parts of the statement read, “On 11/07/2025 at about 1920hrs, upon receiving a distress call that armed men blocked the Fugar-Agenebode road, Etsako East Local Government Area, the Command immediately mobilised a combined team of police operatives from Agenebode, local vigilantes, and hunters who responded swiftly and pursued the assailants into the forest.

“During the encounter, a gun duel ensued along Obe Hill by pipeline leading to Ajaokuta, the security team successfully rescued fourteen (14) kidnapped passengers alive. Unfortunately, a 12-year-old girl was fatally shot by the fleeing kidnappers during the crossfire.

“One female victim is still unaccounted for, and search efforts are ongoing to ensure her safe rescue

“This follows the report that armed men suspected to be kidnappers ambushed and blocked the highway, opened fire on unsuspecting commuters, killing two persons on the spot and abducting others in a brazen act of violence” he said.

Monday Agbonika, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, praised the combined security team’s courage and prompt action.

He reassured the public that every effort is being made to capture the criminals and prosecute them.

The CP told the public that activities in the area had been stepped up while also expressing the Command’s sympathies to the deceased’s family.

such deployments have been made to stop such attacks and find the escaping culprits, he said.
