Aisha Yesuf, a sociopolitical activist, has criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki for vocalizing his displeasure with the results of the Edo State governorship election.

The results of the election held on Saturday, September 21, 2024, were announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday. Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner.

Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party LP won none, leaving Okpebholo of the APC with 11 local government areas won by the party, and Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 7.

The Federal University of Technology Vice-Chancellor and INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, formally declared Okpebholo the election’s victor.

According to INEC, Okpebholo received 291,667 votes, more than Ighodalo’s 247,274 and Akpata’s 18,737 votes, respectively.

According to a report by ZINGTIE, Obaseki entered INEC’s collation center without permission on Sunday at around two in the morning and left around 4:10 in the morning.

Obaseki has stated that he was there to obtain first-hand knowledge.

Obaseki was brought out of the premises by a mixed squad of police officers under the command of DIG Frank Mbah and members of the Nigerian Army.

“I am looking for a video where Obaseki was speaking about the principles of democracy. Please share if you have it,” Mrs Yesufu wrote on X.

“Obaseki that refused for 4 years to swear in 14 Edo House of Assembly members.

“Obaseki that refused to swear in judges. He swore in 5 out of 8.

“Obaseki that got his deputy Governor impeached. He is talking about democracy under attack,” she wrote.

President Bola Tinubu has since congratulated the Governor-elect and his party on their victory, according to ZINGTIE.

APC governor-elect received congratulations from former president Muhammadu Buhari as well.
