The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State has stated that the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) lack of meaningful evidence to support their lawsuit against Governor Monday Okpebholo’s election will force the party to abandon it at the tribunal in the coming days.
The APC expressed anticipation that the PDP will withdraw its petition due to a lack of meaningful evidence to support it, as evidenced by the purported shortcomings of the witnesses’ testimonies submitted at the Tribunal.
The APC’s optimism followed the dismissal of complaints filed by the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, and Allied People’s Movement (APM) by the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which met in Abuja.
The applications were dismissed on Friday, following their abrupt withdrawal against the APC and Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Comrade Wisdom Isaac, speaking on behalf of the petitioners, indicated that their decision to withdraw from the proceedings was motivated by a desire to prioritise Edo State’s welfare and development.
He emphasised the necessity of keeping peace for the state’s well-being and stated that the petitioners had no intention of interfering with the governor’s attempts to lead the state.
He noted that they will have additional opportunities to demonstrate their desire to lead the state as they focus on the 2028 gubernatorial election.
Counsel for the Allied People’s Movement, Jackson Ehiabhi, shared the same thoughts, adding that the petitioners preferred to avoid distracting the governor from his obligations, putting the well-being of Edo State ahead of their individual desires
With the tribunal’s dismissal of the petitions, four cases have been resolved, and the spotlight now shifts to the PDP’s petition.
The APC, on the other hand, expressed hope that the PDP will follow suit and drop its petition in the same way that other parties did after being confronted with genuine facts that their claims lacked substantive foundation, as indicated by the poor testimonies of their witnesses at the tribunal.
Meanwhile, the APC and Governor Monday Okpebholo are set to launch their defence against the PDP lawsuit to vindicate their victory in last year’s gubernatorial election.
