His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, has refuted a statement made by Olumide Akpata, the candidate of the Labour Party, LP, for the upcoming Edo State governor’s race.

In the run-up to the September 21 governorship election, ZINGTIE remembers that on Saturday, Peter Obi, the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Akpata made a polite visit to the Oba’s Palace.

In both the local vernacular and English, Akpata frequently referred to himself as a “son of the palace” when pleading for the traditional ruler’s support during the visit.

In contrast, the Oba quickly refuted Akpata’s claim in a videotape that is circulating, saying that he had contacted one of his chiefs to confirm Akpata’s allegations and discovered that the candidate had no close or direct ties to the Palace.

“You are an industrious son of the soil, but to say you are a child of the Palace, I am not aware that any of my children is contesting or is a politician. So I need to make that clarification for the sake of the public and the fourth estate of the realm,” the Oba stated.

Chieftain Anthony Ehilebo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who shared the video on his official X Twitter on Sunday, responded by making fun of the Libertarian Party candidate.

He wrote, “Can you see how backing the wrong person can bring you shame. If I were Peter na ground i would just enter”!
