Police have detained a mortuary attendant in the Upper Sakponba neighborhood of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, on suspicion of removing critical organs from a deceased at Akugbe Mortuary.

The relatives of the deceased were reportedly incensed by the revelation and accused the attendant of taking organs from the body.

Family members reportedly discovered that several organs were missing when they went to the mortuary on Friday to pick up the body for burial.

Osaro Ivie, an eyewitness, described the situation as chaotic, claiming that after family accused the attendant of participating in ritualistic activities, emotions increased.

“The relatives claimed that the chest cavity of the deceased had been emptied and stuffed with nylon,” Ivie said.

Before police arrived to restore calm, he continued, the crowd threatened to lynch the attendant and burn the mortuary on fire.

The command received a distress call of a mob trying to attack a suspect at the mortuary, according to ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Police Public Relations Officer in Edo, who confirmed the event on Sunday.

“The command received a distress call that someone at Akugbe Mortuary was about to be lynched. The Divisional Police Officer of Ugbekun Division was immediately mobilised to rescue the mortuary attendant accused of harvesting organs from a corpse,” Ikoedem said.

She clarified that the suspect was taken into custody after being safely rescued. The State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, is presently holding the attendant while investigations are conducted to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the charges.

Ikoedem advised locals to maintain composure and let the legal system take its course, assuring them that a comprehensive inquiry will be carried out.
