Edo: Obaseki turned against you — Akpabio mocks Oshiomhole

The outgoing governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, turned against his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, according to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, even though the latter was crucial to Obaseki’s ascent to the position.

During a Senate floor argument, Akpabio stated the following: “The man you brought in as governor (Obaseki) has turned against you and against democracy.”

Responding, Oshiomhole said: “Just for the record, I didn’t bring him in; he was elected, but I supported him, just the way you supported Governor Udom.”

Oshiomhole overrode the desires and counsel of the All Progressives Congress, APC, leaders in order to facilitate Obaseki’s ascent to the governorship in 2016.

The APC leaders had chosen Pius Odubu, his deputy at the time, or another politician to succeed him.

Obaseki overcame Peoples Democratic Party candidate Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu with Oshiomhole’s backing.

Party leaders voiced their displeasure with Obaseki for leaving them out of his administration two years into his term.

The problem got to Oshiomhole, whose peace effort failed as Obaseki pledged never to allow a godfather to dictate to him or blackmail him.

Obaseki’s declaration sparked the Cold War between the couple.

Obaseki had reached out to Oshiomhole before of the 2024 governorship race in an attempt to patch things up for his candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who lost the election.
